Quote from Technique :I think the friend system actually screws up the match making system. Let's take jonsey for example. His irating is MUCH higher than mine. If the friends system pairs us up together, I will wind up hurting his series points. It will either grid me with his field (with high skill ratings) or he'd get put with us slow drivers. Either way, if I get put in the field with the higher skilled guys I'll bring down the average irating and thus the number of points the race winner can earn is lower. If he gets put with the slow drivers and wins by a large margin he'll still only earn minor points. Since the weekly points are averaged he's screwed either way! That's my theory anyway

I agree, but at the same time I've had a couple of races where I've not been with Dustin because he's so slow and I'm fast So I think it will match you up where possible, but I don't think it puts a huge priority on matching you with friends, at least not as much as I initially thought. And if it does end up being a problem, as you suggested, they can always change the weighting of the factors that decide who you race against...

Quote from amp88 :We were having fun powersliding but I caught a patch of less wet grass, suddenly found some grip and got thrown off a couple of feet from the quad, which rolled onto its back and landed just beside me.

If at all possible, make sure the quad always lands beside you rather than on top of you I joke, but there have been a few quad fatalities in my town over the last few years. Much more than dirtbike fatalities, primarily because of the extra weight involved I guess.

Quote from PAracer :I do recall a meathod of turning those Tamiya cars into twin motor rockets. I think it was a combination of TA02-03 parts

As far as I can recall you used two front-ends with engines, one on the front and one on the back. Then of course made sure they were driving both pairs of wheels in the same direction Damn, maybe I should have done that instead of selling the two chassis I had!

Quote from mrodgers :RC flying which is at a standstill because I had a fatal crash and smashed it into pieces. No money to replace it, even though it was a cheapie RTF.

I am in the same situation with my heli I really need to get it out again and figure out exactly what I need because I miss flying it!

I am starting a list here for those who play LFS and iRacing. If you submit your name to the list, then it is assumed you're happy to have LFSers add you to their buddy list

If you want to be on this list, please PM me rather than replying here (to keep the thread tidy!) with the name you use on iRacing, and I will add you to the list. I have added the people who have shared their info on this thread, but PM me if you would like to be removed! I will update this post as people contact me...

Quote from Nathan_French_14 :Question - Do you have a full motorcycle licence? If so, then a motorbike might be a good idea

I was going to ask the same thing... if you're not interested in a streetbike, then fair enough, but if you've not really considered it much, then DO A huge amount of fun... I am so hooked on riding now that I haven't been and raced my car in autox more than a handful of times in the last two years... And I was planning on doing a trackday in my car, but instead I've done one on the bike and the next one I'm planning is for the bike too...

Cool I used to race 10 years ago before I moved to Canada from England. Here's the car I used to race, Tamiya TA-03. They would be MILES away from competitive for racing today (although I could still whip some n00b ass with it, haha!), heck they weren't even all that fast when I raced 10 years ago! But there is interest from drifters in these cars as they are front engined and have a good weight distribution for drifting. I put this car up for sale online recently and had enquiries from across the province, from Eastern Canada, from California, and from the UK! I ended up selling it locally, but a 2nd chassis I had ended up going to Cali...

Haha yes. I do think leather will be better if you're skidding on one part of it for an extended period in a high speed crash. But yeah, in all other situations I think textile does the job well. Anyway, getting a little off topic, I will try and get back on topic now!

Err, yes those four wheeled bike things are fun. And that's all I have to say about that.... :P

Yeah I was actually concerned for my friend as he only had jeans on, and a textile rather than leather jacket... But if it's a risk he's willing to take then it's his decision

Quote from hyntty :I prefer a rather oversteering setup - not tail-happy but easy-to-switch-direction oversteer. I don't like to turn the wheel much. The tinyer the steering move the better.

I prefer this too. Not so I'm constantly needing opposite lock, but just so that I'm not battling understeer at the limit. I prefer a car that turns in well and you can place easily.

Quote from hyntty :On races it depends on my mood how good and cool-headed I am. Sometimes I fail and sometimes I fail more.

Well I don't think I've ever had a signature on my posts since the LFS Forum started up, but I do now, thanks

Quote from Dajmin :My style is (or rather was since it's near-impossible to race well with a pad) slow and consistent.

Well, slow and steady wins the race! Unless of course you're racing someone who is fast and steady, then you're screwed

But yes I'm happier being reasonably quick and consistent than I would be being blindingly fast but not consistent. Obviously being blindingly fast and consistent would be ideal but I don't see that happening any time soon

Quote from Technique :Here's a typical racing experience in that "other" sim with the entire chat log.

When you connect to an LFS server it's like a completely different experience. Total freedom. People chatting back and forth. It's not just a racing sim. It's like a big hang out for racing nerdz Not sure how else I can describe it.

Haha, perfect! Thanks that made my day Yes iRacing has provided me with some thrilling racing, but at the same time it is a bit serious isn't it? I love that I can go on a server on LFS and start making fun of some old friends who ask where I've been and that they miss me beating them (at driving I mean :P). Conversation before and after the race is not looked down upon in LFS, and it's generally a lighter atmosphere as it's taken less seriously in some ways. Nothing wrong with either approach whatsoever, but I do like having a laugh with people I have raced against a lot in LFS.

Quote from breadfan :What I like about LFS:
- the physics are actually even better than those in Need for Speed

Quote from Richie Cahill :"I race cars"

please, no follow up questions...

No follow up questions, muahahaha perfect Man can I relate to that!! Have a girl over and make sure you hide the steering wheel and pedals before she gets here....

Quote from OldBloke :Errr...

C'mon guys. These posts are no longer informative for the LFS community. They belong on the iRacing forums.

I kinda agree with this part, but at the same time....

Quote from OldBloke :Seriously. If you want to build the iRacing community then it's best done there, not here.

...if you have a problem with the posts here, you could always not check the thread I didn't read it once until I got my hands on iRacing and was able to contribute with something based on my experiences, so the 2000 speculative posts made before iRacing was released didn't bother me whatsoever.

And I think it's a useful thread for those interested in learning about iRacing from the perspective of long time LFS players. Although we are giving iRacing a go, we are interested in making the comparison to LFS with friends we've made over the years here. That is better done in the LFS forum than the iRacing forum.

It's a shame when there is such a high percentage of absolute BS on this forum that a perfectly constructive thread like this is a problem for someone.

Quote from Shotglass :reality check
it has been in development since nr2003 so roughly as long as lfs
its damage system produces very similar results to lfs' (no wings falling off, suspension parts can shorten to a ridiculous degree etc) and the collision detection is just as bad at times
that leaves us with better tyres and better tracks which is more a matter of gigo than anything else
all that with more than 10 times as many coders as lfs has

Very true shotglass! But we will all just hold on to the fact that because there are so many developers, these things will be dealt with soon Hehe...

Edit: Yeah I do agree, LFS has been in development longer than iRacing, but still, it is surprising that certain things are missing in iRacing. A lot of things that are missing in iRacing have been in LFS since the first public version! I suppose it's just a case of different priorities, which is fine. I do think the developments over the next year or so will be very important for iRacing though... Whereas LFS is already a very solid product that I don't think needs much work now. Sure, new content will be welcome, but as far as features go it is very well established already.

I also take it quite easy at the starts, trying to avoid t1 messups. Then from there on I will push hard and focus on being consistent. If I was not consistent my pace alone would not usually put me near the front, so I rely on being consistent to help bring me up the field. This works especially well in longer races of course :P

Quote from SamH :Don't even bother to compare iRacing with LFS in this thread as if they're like-for-like. How silly.

Well that's not very nice...

Quote from SamH :It doesn't appear to have even the beginnings of a cohesive community

About the sense of community in iRacing...I am not sure what you are basing that on Sam, but I've found it great so far. I've raced against many people lots of times and when I see people I know often they will say hi and ask how things are. I had a bad race recently and got in the way of someone who was coming up to lap me. I was so frustrated with my performance in the race by this point that I quit. The next day I checked the forum and got this message.... "Hey I noticed you disconnected after our coming together. I guess 'cos you felt bad, well don't. It was just an accident, stuff happens. You made me concentrate on catching second and I ran my fastest laps yet trying. You'll do better next time. I have no worries racing with you in the future. Take it easy." And I've also had another 3 PMs from people saying how much they enjoyed racing with me etc. That's not happened once in LFS... Anyway, I guess all I'm saying is it's easy to judge from the outside, but only when you give it a go can you understand what it's actually like. I could go on about physics and missing features and other things but really I just wanted to mention that one thing as it was not really based on first hand experience.

Quote from Crashgate3 :What ever happened to that promising 4WD sportscar that guy was designing himself? That would have been good.

Congrats on the spoiler in the thread title :P Not that I care, I watched it before I saw the thread, but now I'm glad I didn't check the LFS forums between the time it happened and the time I watched it.

But yeah, what a match...amazing. Certainly the best men's final I've been fortunate enough to watch. So close all the way through. They just played every point like it was the last, right from the start to the finish, and had such energy all the way through. Very impressive! I am very happy for Nadal, what a great match he played.

Quote from major_syphillis :Which folders do I need to copy over between PCs to have the same LFS?

ex: skins, res tracks, setups, etc...?

Well, if you want the skins you have on your current LFS to be on your new one then you're going to have to copy them aren't you! And if you want the setups you're going to have to copy them too How complicated can it be? Surely just decide which of the 2.24GB of stuff you want to copy and then copy it.

I can't get into the Advanced Legends car either. Just don't enjoy oval one bit unfortunately. Usually I zone out around the middle of each race and then end up just counting down the laps until the end. But the Advanced legends is a fun car on the road courses at least.

Good one Nathan

I remember one race in GPL from probably 2000 or 2001... I was following two guys for several laps at Spa, unable to get past them. Spent a lot of the race behind them, and then they both lost the rear end of their cars in perfect unison. One slid sideways off the left side of the track, one off the right side of the track, and I drove straight between them and continued. As a story I guess it's not much, but I just remember how perfectly in time they were and how happy I was to be able to sneak between them and take the positions
